Helium Leak Detection Using MSLD
Helium is the preferred tracer gas for leak detection due to its non-toxic, inert, non-condensable, and non-flammable properties. It is present in the atmosphere only in trace amounts (5 ppm) and, due to its small atomic size, can easily pass through leaks.
A Helium Leak Detector, also known as a Mass Spectrometer Leak Detector (MSLD), is used to locate and measure leaks in systems or containment devices. In this method, helium is introduced into the test part connected to the detector. Any leaking helium enters the system, where its partial pressure is measured, and results are displayed on a meter for analysis.
