Radiography Testing (RT) is a non-destructive inspection method used to detect internal discontinuities in various material types. It is suitable for both field and shop applications, primarily for weld inspections, as well as testing castings and forgings. RT utilizes either X-ray or Gamma-ray (Isotope) radiation as the source.
During radiographic testing, the component is exposed to radiation while a film is placed behind it. Once developed, the film resembles a negative image. The density variations and indications on the film help determine the size, orientation, and location of imperfections within the material, particularly in relation to the weld. The findings are then evaluated based on industry codes to determine whether the defect meets acceptance criteria or requires rejection.
